Delft to Host International Symposium on Resilient and Sustainable Building Renovation

On May 7, 2026, experts from across academia, industry, and government will gather in Delft for the “Shake Up: Resilient & Sustainable Pathways in Building Renovation” symposium. Hosted at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of TU Delft, the one-day event aims to bridge cutting-edge research with practical solutions for creating more sustainable and resilient built environments.

In more detail: The Programme

The program opens with a morning welcome session led by representatives from TU Delft and international policy stakeholders, setting the stage for a day focused on collaboration and knowledge exchange. Early discussions will explore the technical and social dimensions of energy efficiency and circularity, bringing together researchers and practitioners to examine how sustainable renovation strategies can be effectively implemented in real-world contexts.

A key highlight of the symposium will be the late-morning session on multi-hazard resilience, which looks beyond earthquakes to address broader climate-related risks. Speakers from engineering consultancies and research institutions will share case studies and insights on how buildings can be retrofitted to withstand diverse environmental challenges.

Furthermore, the discussion will convene stakeholders from housing associations, municipalities, academia, and industry. The aim will be focusing on the integration of sustainability and resilience into renovation projects, identifying barriers such as financing and policy gaps, and proposing scalable solutions through cross-sector collaboration.

Later sessions will focus on capacity building and education, showcasing TU Delft-led initiatives that train future professionals in areas such as earthquake resilience, architectural recovery, and circular design principles.

By combining research insights with practical experiences, the Shake Up symposium seeks to accelerate the transition toward more resilient and sustainable building practices, addressing both current challenges and future needs in the renovation sector.
