Empowering Local Climate Action: Unlocking Citizen Finance for Clean Energy – Upcoming EU Webinar

24 Mar 2026

On 26 March 2026, an EUwide online webinar titled “Empowering local climate action. Unlocking citizen finance for clean energy projects” will bring together local authorities, energy communities, practitioners, and climate actors to explore how citizen finance and crowdfunding can accelerate the clean energy transition at the grassroots level.

Organised by the EU Office of the Covenant of Mayors and the CitizenLed Renovation Initiative, the webinar will highlight innovative financing models that allow residents to become active investors and co-owners of local clean energy initiatives. Speakers will share real-world cases and practical tools for engaging communities, structuring inclusive campaigns, and unlocking new funding streams for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects across Europe.

For projects like Shake Up, involved in energy-efficient seismic retrofitting, this event underscores the importance of exploring diverse funding sources. While Shake Up focuses on developing technical skills and promoting sustainable building practices, citizen finance mechanisms offer complementary ways to foster community involvement, local investment, and broader social engagement in clean energy initiatives.

Participants will gain practical insights on engaging communities and designing citizen-led investment campaigns to help scale local climate and energy projects.

By involving citizens directly in financing clean energy initiatives, these approaches not only unlock new funding opportunities but also strengthen trust, social cohesion, and shared responsibility for the energy transition.
