The Shake-Up project has released a new report titled “Mapping the Seismic Risk, Average Energy Consumption and LCA of Regions Based on the Current Situation Analysis.” The publication provides an in-depth overview of how seismic risk, building energy performance, and environmental impacts intersect across several European regions.
The report is part of the project’s efforts to support integrated approaches to building renovation, combining improvements in energy efficiency with measures that enhance resilience to earthquakes. Understanding where these challenges overlap is essential for prioritising renovation strategies and developing effective public policies.
A Data-Driven Mapping Approach The study compiles and analyses publicly available data from six countries: Türkiye, Italy, Greece, Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands. Using a mapping methodology, the research identifies geographic areas where high seismic risk coincides with energy inefficiencies in the building stock, highlighting locations where interventions may have the greatest impact.
To achieve this, the report organises indicators into four key thematic groups:
Energy consumption and indoor comfort of buildings
Urban resilience, including renewable energy potential and environmental conditions
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of buildings, evaluating environmental impacts over their lifespan
Seismic risk and building performance in earthquake events
These indicators are collected and analysed using different types of spatial data, including geo-referenced datasets, interactive maps, and academic studies.
Supporting Smarter Renovation Strategies
By correlating these indicators, the report helps identify patterns of vulnerability within the built environment. This approach enables stakeholders to determine which regions or building types should be prioritised for renovation and strengthening interventions.
The findings underline the importance of addressing energy efficiency and seismic resilience together, rather than through separate initiatives. Integrating these aspects can improve building safety, reduce environmental impacts, and support the transition toward a more resilient and sustainable building stock across Europe.

This report represents an important step in the development of the Shake-Up methodology for seismic and energy retrofitting, which aims to provide innovative, economically feasible solutions for improving the performance of existing buildings.
